Becoming a firefighter is not something that everyone can undertake. Volunteer firefighting takes a great deal of physical stamina and mental strength to make this kind of commitment. You’ll be expected to keep a clear head in life-or-death situations and maintain your composure when assisting traumatic events like auto accident injuries and fatalities without becoming disabled by stress. You will also be required to put yourself in extremely dangerous situations, such as going into burning buildings, crawling through tight spaces and entering other hazardous environments.
Becoming a member of a volunteer fire department doesn't just mean you have to become a firefighter. There are the many other functions and responsibilities mentioned above that you can volunteer to help with that are an important part of running a volunteer fire department.
